Local government in Lancashire is changing.
Steeped in history, with a bright future, Lancashire is a thriving place comprising major cities, stunning areas of natural beauty, coastal towns and a mix of culturally significant towns and villages.
We’ve been informed of the government’s preferred option on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Lancashire.
Subject to Parliamentary approval, four new unitary councils will be created, to replace the current 15 councils.

28 November 2025 Final proposals submitted to government
5 February 2026 - 26 March 2026 Government statutory consultation on proposals
16 July 2026 Ministerial decision
May 2027 Election to shadow councils
1 April 2028 Vesting day - new unitary councils go live
